Story
In the winter of 1862, during the Civil War, the U.S. Army sends a company of volunteers to patrol the uncharted West. Minervini built a set in Montana, then let the actors live there for two months. The actors came up with the dialogue and ideas they uttered while living in the wilderness, imagining themselves as Civil War soldiers. The Damned is a completely boring film. It feels like someone filmed a home video with a phone or an old video camera. While the scenery is beautiful, the soldiers just wander around doing nothing. The changing seasons and snowfall add little to the experience. Overall, it’s a complete waste of time. You’d be better off watching a traffic jam from a window in a big city—much more entertaining than this movie. I thought the directors and filmmakers were famous, but I’d never heard of them. It seems like the most famous filmmakers make films for a cross-cultural audience, not for average people like me.
